A Family of Constructions of Approximate Ellipses
نویسنده
چکیده
Ellipses have long played a part in architecture. For instance, more than 4000 years ago in the Middle Minoan period a large oval house was built in Crete [1], while up to the present day in many parts of Africa, India, and Europe oval huts and houses were commonplace [2]. The Romans embraced the ellipse, and employed it on a vast scale in their ampitheatres [3]. In the Baroque period of the Renaissance the ellipse was once again applied, mostly in the design of churches [4]. An elliptical theme recurs in Georgian architecture [5], appearing at all scales from decorative ceiling plaster details, to the plan for drawing rooms, to entire terraces of houses. Right through to modern times the ellipse has remained a popular form in architecture, and some more recent examples from the last five years are the Church of San Giovanni Battista, by Mario Botta [6], the Ruskin Library by Richard MacCormac [7], and Walsall bus station by Allford, Hall, Monaghan, and Morris [8]. Thus the ellipse remains one of the standard shape primitives (along with the circle, square, triangle, etc.) that figure prominently in ancient and modern design (architectural, engineering, graphical, etc.), and is therefore worthy of particular attention. Although the ellipse provides more dynamic possibilities than the relatively static forms of straight lines and circles it also introduces complications. In particular, it is more difficult to lay out, and its continuously varying curvature means that for precise building construction a large range of brick shapes should be used [9]. Another consideration is that its perimeter is difficult to calculate; this is important not only for the estimation of

Simple, Accurate, Approximate Orbits in the Logarithmic and a Range of Power-Law Galactic Potentials
Curves in a family derived from powers of the polar coordinate formula for ellipses are found to provide good fits to bound orbits in a range of power-law potentials. This range includes the well-known 1/r (Keplerian) and logarithmic potentials. These approximate orbits, called p-ellipses, retain some of the basic geometric properties of ellipses. They satisfy and generalize Newton’s apsidal pr...
متن کاملResolving ‘incognito’ ellipsis: treatment for constructions that disguise ellipsis
This paper raises a neglected issue in the study of ellipsis resolution. The existence of ellipsis under certain constructions is often disguised due to the structure that assigns the nominative marking to what is typically the object. This kind of ellipsis deserves attention in view of the fact that its referent is the agent of the sentence and that these constructions are observed in diverse ...
متن کاملA Multi-Layered Discourse Analysis of Students’ Classroom Talk in Two Contexts: Rural vs. Urban
This study aimed at discussing and representing discourse analysis of classroom talk in two contexts. It is significant, since it considers different genres of talk, cultural and social identities, social relations, different ideologies and many other aspects in this analysis. It attempts to analyze the dominant classroom patterns in two contexts. Two cases of study were analyzed in this study:...
متن کاملApproximate minimum spanning ellipse in the streaming model
In [11] Zarrabi-Zadeh and Chan proposed an algorithm to compute an approximate minimum spanning ball in the streaming model of computation and showed by an elegant analysis that the radius of the approximate ball is to within 3/2 of the exact one. Inspired by this result, in this paper we consider the extension of this result to computing approximate minimum spanning ellipses. The ball algorith...
متن کاملOn the Relationship between Tilt of a*b* Tolerance Ellipses in Blue Region and Tritanopic Confusion Lines
There is reasonable agreement between the orientation of the major axes of the a*b* tolerance ellipses in the blue region and the slope of the tritanopic confusion lines passing through their centers. This agreement includes some experimental facts such as the approximate constant orientation of the ellipses when the luminance of the center changes and the clockwise rotation of the major axis o...
